District 10 Charity Committee
by Chuck Wilkinson, District 10 Representative to the
ACBL Board of Directors
December 29, 2004
The ACBL
Charity Committee is a standing committee composed of representatives from each
district. Each district director appoints two new members from his or her
district annually to serve on the ACBL Charity Committee. These are lifetime
appointments. All members of the committee receive, and thereafter are entitled
to wear, official Charity committee pins.
Since
this is primarily an honorary appointment, I select members from our district
whose contributions have placed them head and shoulders above the crowd. These
are people who have selflessly committed their time and energies on behalf of
bridge.
The following are my appointments for 2005:
Maurice Joseph, Baton Rouge, LA
Ð Now retired following a career as an executive in
the retail clothing business, Maurice has served for three years as the Club
Manager for Unit 182 in Baton Rouge. A Bronze Life Master, he also serves
as Game Director and teaches bridge lessons. He continues to be extremely
interested in the Intermediate/Novice program and has been instrumental in
obtaining seventy new ACBL members over the last two years. Due to
his efforts, the Baton Rouge Bridge Club obtained a Two Star rating in 2003 and
a Three Star rating in 2004. All of us are extremely appreciative of Maurice's
achievements in building attendance and membership over the last few
years.
Jennie Flynn Sauviac, New Orleans, LA <ETH> Jennie is a long time LBA member that has served the New Orleans club and unit in several capacities as a BOD member and game director. She served two years as LBA President and is the current Membership Secretary. In 1997, I appointed her to the ACBL Goodwill Committee, making her one of the few people in our district who have been appointed to both committees. As a bridge teacher and game director, she has recruited many new ACBL members. She was instrumental in leading a successful effort to recognize the late Pat Schwartz with a Memorial Gift to the Tulane Medical School and Hospital. Further, Jennie was the person behind the Memorial game, held annually on the second Saturday night in September to honor departed players, friends and spouses.
The following is a list of appointments to the ACBL Charity
Committee each year since the first year in 1960. (Deceased members are still
